Fade in on a shot of a forest clearing. It's night, but the clearing is bathed in the light of a full moon. The trees are tall and majestic and the undergrowth surrounding the clearing is thick. There are new leaves on the trees, so it's not a winter scene. In the center of the clearing is a small one-storey stone church. A flickering light is visible through the stained glass windows. Subtitles tell us what we're looking at:

The Black Forest
Spring, 1582

Cut to the inside of the church. Torches burn in sconces between the stained glass windows, illuminating the interior. While the outside appears Christian, the inside has clearly been converted to other uses. Not defiled, just...changed. The cross is gone and the wall behind the pulpit is covered with racks of weapons of all types and descriptions: Swords, maces, axes, polearms of all sorts, bows, even a few primitive firearms. The altar has been covered with a blood-red cloth. Red candles in ornate golden candle holders burn at each end of the alter. In its center is an obsidian bowl, its contents obscured from the camera's view. In front of the altar, a figure in a hooded rust-colored robe kneels, its head bowed as if in prayer.

At the far end of the room, the church doors suddenly splinter inward and a large red werewolf bounds into the room and charges down the aisle. In a single smooth motion, the robed figure rises to its feet and whirls around, grabbing a battleaxe that had been hung on the front of the alter. As it turns, the hood falls away from its head, revealing the green skin and vaguely Narn-like features typical of Buffyverse demons. It's not a type we've seen before.

The demon is fast, but so is the wolf. The demon manages to get the axe up, but he can't get a good grip on it, so he ends up using it like a quarterstaff. He manages to deflect the momentum of her charge, sending her tumbling off to the side, but the force of the blow staggers him back against the altar.

Meanwhile, Donovan is running down the aisle, sword in hand. The demon again brings his axe up, but still can't find a moment's respite to shift his grip and bring the blade to bear, so he's still using it as a staff, parrying Donovan's blows.

Nonetheless, the demon seems to be enjoying himself. He laughs. "The wolf and the warrior. Your coming was foretold." His grin widens. "I'm afraid it doesn't go terribly well for you." As he says that, he parries one of Donovan's blows and delivers a kick that sends Donovan flying back into the first row of pews.

And then the wolf is back. She comes flying into him from the side, snarling and raking his shoulder with her claws. He barely seems to notice. He smacks her under the jaw with the butt end of his axe, throwing her into the air and sending her crashing into the nave, overturning several rows of pews.

Donovan is on his feet again but moves in more warily now and the demon has finally had time to shift his grip on the axe. He swings in great deadly arcs, forcing Donovan to duck and weave to keep his head, while the demon taunts him. "Your tenacity is admirable, but foolish. (woosh!) The outcome has already been determined. (woosh!) My side wins. (woosh!)"

Just as the demon makes his last swing, the wolf leaps again. He can't get the blade around fast enough, but he catches her stomach on the butt end of the axe and she goes down in a heap. While he's doing that, though, Donovan comes in low and slashes him in the stomach with his rapier. The demon staggers back, the wound emitting the same blue-white glow effect we saw when Drew used the sword against Vivian's pet demon. Donovan stabs the demon in the chest and it goes down, mortally wounded. Donovan looks down at it. "I never was a big believer in prophecy."

The wolf has picked itself up and, strategically hidden behind the altar, begins to turn back into human form. Donovan hands her a cloak, which she wraps around herself. Both of them are grinning.

Melina shakes out her hair, in a rather dog-like gesture. "That was fun. I don't get to let the wolf out like that nearly often enough."

As she speaks, she reaches into the obsidian bowl and pulls out...the Mars Orb.

Donovan leers at her, "Yeah. Almost as much fun as getting the Venus Orb was..."

He holds out the Orb box to her and, rolling her eyes at his comment, she drops the Mars Orb into its slot. All the others are already there. He flips the box shut.

We cut to a demon's-eye (that is, floor-level) view as Donovan and Melina step over the camera and walk down the aisle and out of the church, arms around each other's waists.

Pan slowly back across the wrecked church to the dying demon. A small smile creeps across his face and he whispers, "As it was foretold, so shall it be." And then he dies.

Cut. Night in the woods again, now looking down from above. This time, there are no leaves on the trees and there's snow on the ground. A narrow trail winds through the woods. Again, subtitles tell us where we are:

Solomon
December, 1992

Three figures in dark, hooded robes make their way single-file along the trail. Their forms are indistinct, but the have battleaxes slung over their shoulders. After a few moments, they come out onto the bluffs of Solomon Heights and walk up to the edge. Across the river from them, Solomon is laid out before them, looking festive with its displays of Christmas lights. Lots of lights this year. As creatures about to give expository dialog are wont to do, they lower their hoods for no particular reason, revealing themselves to be demons of the sort we just saw Donovan and Melina fighting.

Demon #1 waves out over the town. "There. In that town lies the end of our journey."

Demon #2 looks at him. "Are you certain?"

"Can you not feel its power? For four hundred years we have sought for that which was taken from us. At last, our years of exile are over. By the time the moon sets tomorrow, what was once ours shall be again."

And all three demons chant, in chorus, "As it was foretold, so shall it be."

Opening credits.
